We made ANZAC Biscuits!

In Room 11, we have been busy learning about ANZAC Day. We learnt about some ways in which we commemorate the war, such as making wreaths, observing a minutes silence, wearing a red poppy and eating ANZAC biscuits. Back when the war was on, it took about 3 months for the boats to deliver the soldiers their food, so it had to be long-lasting. The soldiers Mums, wives and girlfriends would bake them biscuits to let them know that they were thinking of them. Today we call them ANZAC biscuits. Our class was luck to have the opportunity to bake some ANZAC biscuits and eat them. They were delicious and crunchy! Here are some photos.

SUNNYBRAE ANZAC PARADE

On the 24th of April 2015 Sunnybrae school had our ANZAC parade. All the classes made ANZAC related items to take for the parade. The Year 6’s lead us to where we had to sit. We sang the New Zealand National Anthem at the beginning of the parade. We had a guest speaker and her name was Juliana Austen. After hearing what she had to say we heard the Senior children’s poems about the ANZACs. After that we heard a bugle call then the classes one by one started to walk out to the field of remembrance. We laid down our wreaths that Room 11 made in front of the white crosses fixed into the ground.

MY GREAT GRANDAD’S MEDALS

One day around ANZAC day I brought in my great Grandad’s photos and medals from WW2!!!He didn’t fight in the war he fixed  communication problems.I never meet him because he sadly passed a bit after the war.The medals were for saving a man out of a jeep putting aside his own life to save someone else’s life. The other one that you will see is just for being brave to go in the war it was from the Queen!! I love him and miss him. His name is the same as my grandad Jack Ralston.

THE DAY THE SOLDIER CAME TO SUNNYBRAE

On Friday 24 April a soldier was at the door! He had a piece of paper in his hand and was asking people if they wanted to join the War. You could be a nurse or a soldier.  I was a soldier and Simaima was a nurse to help people in the War. The soldiers name was Sergeant Weaver! he was wearing camouflage. He got all of the class to say soldier or nurse all the boys and me and Ahlianah and May we all were soldiers and mostly all the girls were nurses!

Soccer

On the 22nd April 2015 Room 11 went out to the school field to practice soccer with the Football kids NZ Northern Football Federation coaches.

We played lots of fun games including Bull rush with soccer balls. This works by having one tagger in the middle and everyone else with a soccer ball trying to get to the other side without the tagger kicking the ball out of the boundary.

Next we played cowboys and cowgirls. This game works by having two people on each side of the pitch trying to kick their ball into other peoples ankles, feet or soccer balls. If they succeed they go to the side and they become a cowboy/cowgirl.The people who are not in are running to each side of the pitch (not running around in the middle).

The coaches were really cool. At lunchtime one of them even dressed up as an orange dragon and stood in the middle of the goal and blocked kicks from all the kids.

We had an awesome time and we hope that they come back to Sunnybrae school!

Room 11’s ANZAC topic

For the past two weeks we’ve been learning about ANZAC day so we’re making the most of it. The teacher brought in books about the war and even little green men (soldiers) and tanks. The whole class has gone ANZAC cray-cray! We even got to enlist in war! There are big men holding guns hanging on the walls and our reading blooms worksheets are all about war now! We’re all sad about the two weeks ending. By Jack and Bradley
